Let’s take a look back at some of the prominent carpeting trends of the past 40 years!
- In the 1970’s, lots of color and plush was de rigueur for any “funky” home! Remember those “shag” carpets? Remember those crazy colors? All of those things originated in the 1970’s… the bolder the color and the softer the shag, the better! And of course, no living room in the 1970’s would be complete without a plush couch to match the shag carpet!
- As we took our DeLorean into the 1980’s, the tastes changed with the times. THANK GOODNESS, because really, how much more green carpeting could we take? The Decade of Decadence saw everything becoming pink, pinker, and pinkest, and people began extending the carpeting into the bathroom. While plush shag carpeting was often eschewed for a more durable style, chevrons and floral prints were, seemingly, EVERYWHERE.
- The grunge era of the 1990’s ditched all the crazy colors of the past two decades, and traded form for function. Carpeting came out of the bathroom – finally! – and crazy colors were substituted for beiges, browns, and other neutral tones.
- At the dawn of the new millennium, eclecticism started to make a bit of a comeback. While things didn’t get as crazy as they did in the 1970’s and 1980’s, the economy did start to take a bit of a downturn, so durable polyester carpets became more commonplace…simply because they’d last longer!
- Today’s carpeting is also conscious of the economic downturn, but is also concerned with the rise of individualism. So, while the polyester fibers of the turn of the century are still commonplace, darker and bolder colors are starting to make a comeback.
