October is on its way…which means the air is getting colder, the nights are getting longer…and your house definitely needs to be insulated better!
Insulation may seem like an unnecessary expense, but it’s absolutely necessary to have in your home, regardless of whether or not you live in a location where the climates change significantly.
What does insulation, exactly, do? Well, aside from assisting in unnecessary heat loss – or gain – proper insulation decreases sound from being transmitted across different rooms. Insulation can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood, wool (glass wool – the pink fibrous material – is usually the most common material used in residential buildings), and polystyrene.
But one of the fastest-rising materials being used in insulation today is foam. Whereas foam used to be used on a much smaller scale – most notably in the product Great Stuff – now foam is being used to insulate the entire home on a large scale. Made from polyurethane, foam insulation is more expensive than other types of insulation (about $600 per room), it also lasts a lot longer and is easier to apply. However, there are some pitfalls to foam insulation as well.
First of all, spray foam isn’t easy to apply. You need to hire a professional contractor to get your spray foam installed. Second, spray foam eventually contracts & pulls away from framing – this usually results from a bad batch of chemicals, improper mixing of chemicals, or application of the spray foam in a temperature that’s too high.
Regardless of the pitfalls of spray foam, however, it can be just as effective, if not moreso, than traditional foam if properly sprayed and applied. In addition, spray foam – if applied correctly – comes with fewer problems than other insulation materials.
